  1. WS: Weapon skill, how good the close combat skill is.

BS: Ballistic skill, how good they are at shooting

S: Strength, Ability to do damage in close combat

T: Toughness, Ability to ignore damage

W: Wounds, miniature is removed after they lose their last wound

I: Initiative, models with higher initiative hit first in close combat

A: Attacks, how many attacks the model makes in a close combat round

Ld: Leadership, used for morale checks and saving against psychic attacks

Sv: Save, making a successful saving throw ignores a wound

If you have a Games Workshop shop in your area, you can go there and ask for them to show you a demonstration game.

  2. Weapon Skill, Ballistic Skill, Strength, Toughness, Wounds, Initiative, Attacks, Leadership and Save.

Unfortunately, linking you to an online copy of the rulebook would be illegal and a breach of Yahoo!'s user policy as well as GW's intellectual property.  However, a draft copy of the new 5th Edition rules has been circulating widely on the Internet for over six months.  No pictures, background or hobby stuff, but the rules are there.  If you ask around - discreetly - I'm sure someone will be able to help you out.

However, if you don't want to spend "that kind of money", then the GW hobby probably isn't for you.  Spending money is largely unavoidable if you want to play the game.

If you want to learn the rules, though, check out your local hobby store or wargaming club.  There's bound to be someone there who'll share their rulebook with you.  Alternatively, if there's anyone else you know in a similar situation, why not go halves on a new rulebook?
