Warhammer or warhammer 40k?

Im about to buy a Warhammer or Warhammer 40k set.

I want to know which one is better, I like the Warhammer one the most because they dont have guns and stuff and the mini-figures look more real without guns, but since the warhammer 40k one is the newest, there might not be anybody who plays the warhammer original one.

What do I do?

  1. I think the best thing for you to do is go to a Games Workshop store, or maybe a local gaming club.

People there should be more then helpful in explaining the differences in the games, and in the stores you should be ok to have taster games of both systems.

When i started i went for the army out of both systems that appealed to me, and thus play that system more. Have practice games then you'll know for sure.

  2. I prefer just warhammer. 40K is more common but there are people who still play the original.go to games workshop and they will explain both types of the game, and give you and help that you need.

  3. Warhammer Fantasy is celebrating it's 25th birthday this year.  Yes 40K is newer, but Fantasy is not going away.  Games Workshop has declared both systems are their core and intend to keep supporting both as long as they can.  I've been playing Warhammer Fantasy since 1986 and 40K since 2002.

The best thing to do is check out the local gaming stores in your area and see what people are playing.  Both games are well supported in my area but more people play 40K.  Among my friends, however, most prefer Fantasy.  I play both as do a lot of my friends.  One friend of mine prefers Fantasy, but starting playing 40K so he could convince 40K players to try Fantasy, and he's had a few converts so far.  It won't matter which game you pick if you can't find people to play against, but if you can find at least 5 or 6 other players in your area you should be fine.

40K games are faster and you usually don't need as many figs, but I think Fantasy requires more strategy to play.  At any rate both games are a lot of fun to play and provide some great creative outlets for painting and modelling.

Look over both systems and decide what appeals to you most, and if there are people who play that game in your area, then go for it.

The important thing is, whichever game you play, find an army that you like the looks and flavor of and one that suits your playing style.  Each army plays differently.  Some are good at standing back and shooting, some have to charge into the melee in order to be effective; some armies are fast and some are slow.  Some armies are composed of a lot of expendible figures and others are fewer in number but most of their figs are tougher than average.  So find one that you will enjoy both painting and playing.  Because that will definitely make the game more fun for you.

I like to mix it up personally.  In 40K I play Space Wolves, which are like Vikings in power armor.  They are best when they charge into hand to hand battle.  But in Fantasy I usually play the Wood Elves, who excel at moving around and shooting at the enemy in guerilla like tactics to weaken the opponent before they get into hand to hand.  Which army you pick makes a BIG difference on how you'll play the game.

Either of the boxed sets (Fantasy: Battle for Skull Pass or 40K: Battle for MaCragge) will give you all the rules you need to understand the game and enough figs from two different armies to get a feel for the differences between the two and to play some small games.

If you decide to go with 40K, you may want to wait, as I have heard that a new boxed set with a newer rulebook is coming out this summer (with Space Marines and Orks instead of Space Marines and Tyranids in it).  So unless you really want the Tyranids and won't mind buying the new rulebook seperately when it comes out I'd wait for the new set.  The Fantasy boxed set is a newer release though and I haven't heard any rumors about a new Fantasy rulebook in the pipeline.  So if you want to play Fantasy then Battle for Skull Pass is a good deal.  You'll also want to pick up the Army Book/Codex for whichever army you decide to play, as that's where you'll find the special rules for that army.

  4. there are still alot of players for warhammer but i personaly like the warhammer 40k its more fun and chaos rule so its up to you really

  5. Up to you, but i prefer 40k, because of the better expansions and the faster game pace. Fantasy is really slow and full of unbalanced units.
