I have recently moved to a new home and the gas water heater is located in the attic. I have noticed that all of my cold water faucets start out cold for a few seconds and then the water starts to get warm but not hot. What could be the problem?

  1. You need a check valve put on your water heater. The preasure dif is causeing a back flow.Jus get hubby to put one on should take 5 min

  2. If you live in a warm climate, your cold water won't be cold.  Remember it runs through pipes outside... just like when you turn on a garden hose and the water is hot at first because it was in the sun.  Unless the water is getting hot enough to burn, I'd say that it's just cold water is only as cold as it is on it's way in.  :)  The water is cooler at first because it's the water that was inside the house, not from the outside source!

  3. If you put in a check valve always put in an expansion tank also. Water heater will split without one.

If you have a new home they always have a new home warranty. Inquire about this problem and see if any other people have had similar experiences.

  4. Concerne has the right idea, but I believe in your case that the supply water line goes up into your attic to supply the gas water heater up there first and that other 'cold water' supply lines to other faucets, toilet and such take off from that supply line and travel through the attic and down the walls to the locations of 'cold water' service.  During the hot Summertime, and especially if you live in the southern climes of the country, the temperature in your attic might reach as high as 105 - 110 deg. F., and your exposed 'cold water' piping can be warmed up quite a bit before any colder water can come in from your underground main supply line.  It's a HELP for your water heater -- both in the Summer and in the Winter, BUT -- depending upon how expensive your water is, you may be wasting a lot of the energy your heater saves you by having to run and run water down the drain to get it cool enough to satisfy you every time.
