After about a month of running in my favorite running shoes they both got holes right about where my pinky toes rest? Does this say something about my stride or step? Is it something i should worry about or fix? I dont want to be running wrong and putting extra stress on my knees or ankles!

  1. Thatb should NOT be happening... I'm a marathon runner, and shoes are supposed to be traded out every 500 miles.  Usually you are supposed to switch them before they get holes in them! I'm willing to bet you run on the outside of your feet.  Try running with equal weight on your whole foot, and make sure you go heal toe, to get the most pressure on your heal.

  2. The reason that your shoes are wearing the way they are is because of something called supination (sometimes called under-pronation). In your case you are over-supinating.

The opposite of supination is called pronation. Pronation is when a runner`s fit rolls inwards after impact. Pronation is the most efficient way for the foot to handle the impact of running. There is of course such a thing as over-pronation but it does not appear to be your problem.

Since your foot is rolling outwards you will need shoes designed to handle it or wear specially made inserts (called orthotics) . Running in the shoes you now have can cause you injury over time because the area of the shoe that was designed to control the supination has been worn away.

It is important that you replace your shoes immediately.

You will need to find a store that specializes in running shoes. The salespeople there will want to look at the wear patterns of your worn-out shoes and ask you questions about your running habits. They can help you find shoes that are specifically designed for your foot, foot strike (supination), body weight, weekly mileage, running terrain, etc.

Please do not bother trying to find this kind of specialized help at a department store or discount store. Those people are there to sell shoes not help runners.
