How hard is it to become a helicopter pilot in the army? Specifically an apache pilot. If I don't have perfect vision is it still possible I can become a pilot, 20/100 left eye 20/200 right eye. Are there waivers for that. How long does it take to complete training?.Also, how long are the enlistments if I decide to go this route?

  1. If your gonna do it, fly a real helicopter.  Be a Chinook driver.  It's bigger, faster and sexier than an Apache.  Also there is a lot more room for luggage.

  2. It depends on what is wrong with your eyes; they need to be correctible to 20/20 (but let the Army correct them; don't get LASIK/PRK beforehand!).  There are two main ways to become a helicopter pilot. One is to enlist and stay in for long enough to become a warrant officer (a fairly long process) and then earn a competitive selection as a pilot.  The other is to join the Army as an officer.  To do this, you need a bachelor's degree.  You can either go to West Point, do Army ROTC, or get a bachelor's degree and then apply to Officer Candidate's School.  Once you are commissioned and assuming you get an air spot, training can be up to 2 years long.  As an officer, you don't have "enlistments" but your commitment to pay back for school (ROTC/USMA) & flight school is usually around 8 years minimum.

  3. Talk to an Army recruiter go through the testing at meps. I cannot tell you if you medically qualify. I can tell you the process once it's determined you do qualify based on ASVAB, MEPS and your back ground. The Recruiter will get you a selection packet at which time you will begin to get together a packet that you will send to a selection board. You are either selected or not I cannot tell you how the board will decide. This is a fairly long process but worth it if you don't want to get your 4-year degree. It's generally the same process as becomming a regular officer. If you are selected you will go through WOCS(warrant officer candidate school) if you make it through that phase you will become pilot training. Which helicopter you fly is dependent on the needs of the Army and your performance. Good luck in your endeavor.
