My brother has a court date coming up real soon, like in sept, for 2 counts of bad checks(felonys)out of Mississippi, and he is only 17,but they charged him as a adult, and I refuse to let him spend one day in jail so I told him to run,so i was wondering,if they put a warrant out for him,can he still fly overseas and start over?or will they stop him at the gate or when he walks into the airport? What are the chances he will get arrested at the airport?

  1. If this is his first offense, he will probably only get probation and a stiff fine, along with restitution.

If this isn't his first offense, he may and should spend some time cooling his heels in a prison cell.

Of course, you on the other hand are guilty of a larger offense and if the prosecutor's office finds out that you told or helped him to run,You will probably be facing 1-5 in the big house.

Actually, they could charge you with at least 3 felonies that I can think of right now.

  2. Good advice so far, but something else to consider: IF he has a passport right now, which he will need to leave the country, he has to get a visa for many countries outside the US.  If he goes to Canada or Mexico where none is necessary, he becomes a Federal fugitive and will be extradited for fleeing prosecution.  There are few countries he could go to anyway that would not extradite him, and most of those are a lot less pleasant than an American jail.  The comment above about you being charged as well is also correct: aiding and abetting a fugitive, accessory after the fact; these are just the beginning.  If the checks each are less than $500 to different parties, chances of him doing any real time are slim, unless he has other charges, or a juvenile record.

Let little brother grow up so you won't need to clean up his messes any more.  Harsh, I know, but true.

  3. Run Forest, run!

  4. Smooth move !!!!

Not only have you convinced your brother to run instead of facing the charges like a man, but you have MADE YOURSELF AN ACCOMPLICE after the fact by telling him to do so.

If he is flying overseas, he must show identification prior to the flight, and YES there is a real good chance that he will be arrested.

What ever happened to the old saying:  "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time!"  ?

  5. Take it from someone who knows first hand.....Running gets you nothing but MORE jail time. They always find you, its just a matter of when, and when they do running is a new separate charge! If it is the first time hes been in trouble he will probably not even go to jail. If he pays for the checks before he goes to court he will almost definately be put on probation. Running is like trading in probation for jail time. Besides weather you like it or not he wrote the checks and needs to step up and take responsibility and make things right.
