Warren Sapp says he would have stood up and stopped New Orleans Saints bounty scandal - NFL News
New Orleans Saints bounty scandal continues to churn out more and more revelations with each passing day but the most damning news yet is the release of a 12-minute audio recording in which then Saints defensive coordinator is heard urging his players to
injure San Francisco 49ers players before a playoff divisional round game.
The recording released by filmmaker and blogger Sean Pamphilon shows the Saints coach telling his defence to “kill the head” of 49ers running back Frank Gore and “putting a l**k” on wide receiver Kyle Williams who has a history of concussions.
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers, defensive tackle and current analyst Warren Sapp in an interview this week was shocked at the contents of the speech given by Williams.
The former Super Bowl champion said that if he was in the Saints defensive line he would not have remained in the same room without standing up to Williams.
“Not for one second would I sit in a room and listen to someone say, ‘We’re going to take out someone’s ACL,’ without standing up and saying, ‘What the h**l are you talking about?’ ”
Adding further he said,
“The way you play defence isn’t about malice. It’s about putting you in fourth-and-more than you can handle.”
Sapp described the bounty scandal as a huge anomaly in the National Football League (NFL) and maintained that players are a fraternity and such things do not happen normally.
“This is an anomaly, it’s not the exception. It’s one in 3 billion. This is the most heinous, egregious thing in the history of this game.”
The Buccaneers legend also went on to add that a lack of great players in the defensive roster helped grow the program as there was no one to stand up to Williams and try to put an end to such illegal activities.
“It takes a great player to stand up there and say, ‘Fellas, we can’t do this.’ The only one with the power to say something was Darren Sharper. We heard what he had to say.”
Williams received an indefinite suspension from the NFL for master minding the Saints bounty program and after the release of the audio recording it seems that the defensive coordinator is unlikely to ever coach an NFL team again.
