Warren condemns ‘Money’ and ‘Hayemaker’
Today British boxing promoter Frank Warren released a statement condemning the recent actions of No.2 rated Floyd Mayweather Jr. and WBA heavyweight champion David Haye. The statement comes just a day after Warren sunk his teeth into former junior welterweight Ricky Hatton for having a drug problem.
Warren began by saying, “As a promoter, you sometimes need to generate publicity and sometimes say things to make a fight sell. But last week David Haye and Floyd Mayweather overstepped the mark.”
Warren criticized Mayweather first, saying that he has so far refused to fight Manny Pacquiao, but that this denial didn’t stop him from calling Manny Pacquiao a “yellow chump.” In a video released a week and a half ago, Mayweather said he was going to “stomp the midget” Pacquiao and get him to “make [me] some sushi rolls and cook some rice.”
Warren responded by offering the following question, “...you wonder what Mayweather's reaction would have been had Pacquiao been making similar comments, but using the word black rather than yellow.”
Turning his attention to British champion David Haye, Warren assessed his upcoming November 13 bout in Manchester with European champion Audley Harrison. Warren criticized Haye for calling the fight a “public execution” and for saying that it would be as “one-sided as a gang rape.” Warren said, “God forbid anything does happen to Harrison. What makes the stupid comments even worse is that this week Darren McDermott, who was due to fight Paul Smith in October, has undergone surgery to stop a bleed of the brain.”
There is a long-standing feud between Frank Warren and David Haye, who is not represented by the promoter. Harrison, on the other hand, is a Warren-promoted fighter. Haye is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.
When moving up to the heavyweight division, Haye was offered an opportunity to fight a 41-year-old Matt Skelton by Warren. Haye quickly turned down the offer because he didn't like the money or want the repute, spurring anger on the part of Warren.
