Warrington Wolves utility back Mathew King uncertain about his future with super league’s outfit
Mathew King believe his future with Warrington based English professional rugby league club, Warrington Wolves, as a utility back is still uncertain.
King was talking to media on Thursday, June 23 regarding his plans and commitments when he expressed his feelings about his tenure at the club.
Mathew King, commonly called Matt King, joined the Wolves in the 2008 season and his current contract will end at the end of the current season. Australian born King has hinted that he is still considering his choices and has not decided whether he will remain at the club or leave it. He further added, “Hopefully within the next two-to-three weeks everything with the contract will be sorted and one way or the other we'll come up with a decision.”
The 30-year-old King started his professional rugby career in the National Rugby League in Australia with the Melbourne Storm team in 2003 season. He was part of the team, which lifted the 2007 Grand Final, which was his last season at the club.
King made 91 appearances for the Storm in the National Rugby League competition and scored 242 points. In 2005/06 season, King was selected in the Australian national side and represented Wallabies in the Tri Nations tournament. He has played 10 international matches for Australia so far. Besides this, he has also played for the Country Origins and New South Wales.
King admitted that he has a few options available which include a possible switch to Australia. He confirmed that the he had updated the team management and club management on his possible decision. He further added, “They know of my desires next year and they also know that I'm an Aussie and at some stage I'm going to want to go home. Whether that is next year or whether I sign another contract with Warrington and then go home, I still don't know.”
Warrington is currently at the top of this year’s English Rugby League tournament. They have played 18 games and secured 26 points in the season.
King further added that leaving a team in such fine form is a tricky question. He said, “If I was to go home at the end of this season and if we miss out on the Super League or another Challenge Cup, then the boys do it next year when I'm back home - that would be a pretty bitter pill to swallow.”
Warrington is expected to confirm the final decision of the utility centre and winger King in the next couple of weeks.
