  1. The n**i's were democratically elected, as were the british government.......

  2. I found this gem of an article [1] directly answering your question.

The author cites at least 23 cases of democracies going to war with rebuttal and counter-rebuttals to whether participants could properly be defined as democracies.  Basically, it all depends upon definition.  He then goes into some other interesting subjects that I'll allow you to read on your own.  Finally, he posits the McDonald's Peace Formula - that until recently, it was believed that no two countries with McDonalds ever fought in wars.  It's not so banal as it must sound here - in fact, it makes a great hypothesis for correlated factors for why war may be less likely between democracies, but I'll just let you read.

Granting that Germany's status as a democracy leading up to WWII is challenged, this quote by Hermann Goering should be a chilling reminder that the people may not necessarily block plans for war:

"Why, of course, the people don’t want war.... Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally, the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship...."

"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." [2]

  3. Not so, wars take place in democracies all the time.

  4. not true.  Many wars have taken place between democracies.

wars tend to take place when fundamental policy are at odds or land & resource disagreements.

for example, with hitler, who was leading a democracy, we had a fundamental policy disagreement.

  5. Wars generally do not take place between democracies.

To claim that n**i Germany was a democracy is ridiculous.  Cite the actual election Hitler won.  He lost the '32 Presidential election and was appointed Chancellor.  Besides, elections are only one element of a democracy.  The Caucasus?  Please, those countries are about as democratic as Iraq.

  6. Hi

hitler was democratically elected ( despite being a fascist  ) . Churchill and Roosevelt  were also democratically elected , and they had a pretty big war . there are loads of wars through out history were democratic countries fought against each other  .

  7. besides...we are not a democracy.  we are a republic...so i guess we can have wars.

  8. nope - ever been to the Caucasus?

  9. Not true. In 1979 their was a war between Vietnam and China, neither of whom could be called democratic.

The Sino–Vietnamese War, also known as the Third Indochina War, was a brief but bloody border war fought in 1979 between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The PRC launched the offensive in response to Vietnam's invasion and occupation of Cambodia, which ended the reign of the PRC-backed Khmer Rouge. After a brief incursion into Northern Vietnam, PRC troops withdrew about a month later. Both sides claimed victory in the last of the Indochina Wars.

  10. There have been very few wars between independent democracies.

UK v Finland is a rare example.

In an attempt to recover the lands lost in 1940 Finland agreed to join the German Army in its attack on the Soviet Union in June 1941. This resulted in Britain declaring war on Finland later that year.

Re the two answers below, Germany was a single party state long before the war began.  Legislation was passed by Hitler forbidding any opposition.  Also, UK and USA were democracies, yes, but the question is about wars where both opponents were democracies, not just one side.

  11. History has proven that there have been wars between democracies. However in more recent times, Democracies or Republics have never been a stumbling block for governments to have the odd war here or there, it has always been down to commodities. For years we had the cold war, where the superpowers of the day used puppet states to flex their muscles. The dirty tricks brigade, and all states have them, destabilised countries and actually created wars, all in the name of freedom (fighting communism) check out Vietnam or Korea. Back in the good old days we, (Joe public) did not have access to the electronic communications that we have today and tended to actually believe the propaganda of the governments of the day, thankfully today we are more able to determine the truth of the situation. Through contact with each other via the electronic media, I believe and hope that the governments of the world today do not have it all their own way and are answerable to us the people, as has been the case in Iran/Iraq.
