Question:

Warts due to HPV....How can I make them go away??

Okay, I contracted warts due to HPV - which I got from my husband. My insurance was canceled about a month ago and I have warts that I need gone ASAP. The insurance i had wouldn't cover the prescriptions my doctor gave me for it and I didn't have $300 to pay for it. My doctor checked them out and said that once i get rid of the ones I have, they probably won't come back for a while. So, my question is: Is there anything over the counter that I could try to use to remove them on my own?? I have considered going to the health dept. and having them remove them because it's cheaper but, that place is gross and I am trying to avoid that place if at all possible. Would regular otc wart removers be okay to try - they are not on the sensitive areas, they are only right above my pubic bone. Any ideas would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!!

  1. No, there is no over the counter wart removers for genital warts. They are only for regular warts which are a different strain. Plus, the ingredients they put in those creams which are antiviral meds may irritated the vaginal area and cause even more problems, so I suggest you woman-up and go to the nearest clinic to have them remove. I understand there is not much you can go do in the meanwhile considering you have no medical insurance, but you got the infection, it would never go away, you know the risk, you should ALWAYS consider of having some form of insurance even if it is not much. Now, you are in the position just like everyone else.

No medical insurance= you will have to go the dirty clinics. So there is not at all any options that you have. But I don't see why you should feel self conscious about them, your husband gave you them. If anything, the way you see his body is just the way he sees your's. So what is the problem?

  2. Mostly, everybody carries the virus HPV. It spreads faster/easier through sexual contact but nevertheless we all carry it. It was estimated that in the year 2000, there were approximately 6.2 million new HPV infections among Americans aged 15-44. Approximately 130 HPV types have been identified. Some HPV types cause warts (verrucae) or cancer, while others have no symptoms.

About 30-40 HPV types are typically transmitted through sexual contact.

To this day we still don't understand what triggers a wart to grow. Knowing only that due to HPV 2,7 warts appear occasionally thoughout people's lives. Usually being most UNcommon around your mid-20s +

    To answer your question however:

Some OTCs will work... but it depends on how mature your warts are. I have tried a Wart Remover OTC on some I had a while back and it did nothing for me. But if they are small and young -- you may have a good chance of the OTC working.

Your best bet is to get that insurance... even if it's the cheapest one you can find... and go to the doctor and have them frozen off with liquid nitrogen. It isn't fun and hurts a lot. But it gets the job done. the liquid nitrogen causes the skin to burn and froms a blister around the wart. After a couple weeks tops the blister goes down and creates a scab and/or dead tissue around the wart. You can then let it fall off naturally or peel it off your skin yourself.

Good Luck! Hope that helped some.

  3. In my hometown we have different hospitals that will see patients with no income/ a sliding scale fee. Call hospitals in your area, they might have there own private insurance, and you can go to the doctors they deal with. Also you can go to http://www.hivtest.org for Free Clinics/ Clinics in your area that will give you adivce on what to do.
