Hampshire were all out for 141 runs in their first innings with none of their batsmen managing to score a half-century. The top scorer of the innings was middle-order batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sean-Ervine-c2471, who collected 36 runs.
The innings belonged to England’s promising youngster Woakes, who took 7 wickets in the day. He was in menacing form and did not allow the opposition’s batsmen to settle down.
At close of play, Warwickshire had also lost 4 wickets for 96 runs, trailing by 45 runs with 6 wickets in hand. Majority of the runs for the team were scored by opening batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Varun-Chopra-c2745, who got out for 55 before close of play.
Earlier, the home team’s skipper Jim Troughton had opted to field first after winning the toss. The pitch appeared to be damp, which suggested some assistance for the seamers.
The decision proved to be a very good one, as the ball did quite a few tricks on the first day’s play. A total of 14 wickets fell in the entire day, as the batsmen from both sides struggled to settle down.
Hampshire’s openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Liam-Dawson-c1840 got off to a cautious start, collecting 35 runs at the top of the order. The former failed to make most of the start, getting dismissed for 17 runs.
The visitors were 48/1 at one stage of the innings and looked to steady the innings. However, they lost 4 wickets on the same total and were 48/5 in just a span of a few overs.

Wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Bates-c1947 was the next batsman to be dismissed in the innings after scoring 1 run, leaving Hampshire struggling at 57/6.
However, Ervine and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AD-Mascarenhas-c912 gave some momentum to the visitors with a solid 64-run stand for the seventh wicket. They failed to make a significant impression though and were dismissed for 36 and 33 respectively.

Warwickshire’s Woakes was exceptional with the ball, using the conditions to his advantage. He dismissed 7 batsmen in the Hampshire innings.
The hosts’ opener Chopra gave a solid start to his side, scoring 55 runs. His effort guided the team to 96/4 until close of play. Troughton and wicketkeeper batsman Tim Ambrose will resume play on day-two for their side, as both were unbeaten on 17 and 1 respectively.
