Warwickshire vs Lancashire – County Championship Division 1 – Match Recap
Warwickshire secured a second win, from as many games, of the County Championship Division One, defeating Lancashire by 5 wickets at the Aigburth stadium, Liverpool, on April 22, 2012.
Touted as a revenge match, following last season’s heart break where Warwickshire relinquished their top position on the final day – and their opponents went onto secure their first Championship triumph after a wait of 77 years.
However, the defending champions started the current domestic season on a disappointing note, losing their opening game against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sussex-c852. The momentum did not change, as Warwickshire inflicted another defeat, relegating their opponents to the bottom position.
After the first two days, where Lancs could only manage 250 in their first innings, and Warwickshire losing five batters on the score of the 66, the contest was evenly poised before the latter took control, courtesy of a mammoth partnership between Darren Maddy and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rikki-Clarke-c85428.
Both struck centuries and partnered in a massive 224-run stand to help the team to its dominant position in the game. The tourists http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JS-Patel-c1747, grabbing impressive five-fors to halt the local side on 148.
The final morning began with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lancashire-c806 resuming their second innings from their overnight score of 44 for 4 – still 35 runs adrift of their opponent’s first innings total. However, with the Aigburth pitch looking increasingly difficult to bat on the host team faltered badly.
Only four batters reached the double figure mark, the most notable being http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AG-Prince-c949 (51). The South African overseas player resumed from his overnight score of 5 and held one end strong, but failed to garnish the support he would have hoped for.

The defeat has left the defending champions, along with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Glen-Chapple-c60141, is hopeful of a turnaround.
"This year we have started slowly, but a couple of wins and we can get ourselves back in the hunt. It is important to address what isn't quite right at the moment, but it is not far off. "We have had a good chat and we know where we need to go. It is a brand new season, being champions is irrelevant, we have said that from the word go. It is up to us to perform," said Chapple.
