Most English translations say that Israel "must be wiped off the map." Some Persian speakers object that what he really said was that "the regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time."

As far as I can see, "vanish from the page of time" is a metaphor which is not used in English. The English metaphor "to be wiped off the map," it seems me, is be a very close match in meaning and tone to "to vanish from the page of time." And, of course, the regime occupying Jerusalem IS Israel, is it not?

To me, it seems like a very good translation.

What he was talking about was the destruction of the state of Israel, wasn't he?

Am I wrong? Can anybody explain the difference, if there is one?

Yes! It's old news! It's all over the internet but it is still being ignored, as the 'wiping off' sounds a lot cooler and threatening than what he originally said.

Mis-quote or not - there is no doubt about it Israel will attack Iran with or without NW. Iran is the only country left in the region that can challenge Israel.

Ahmadineejad actually said;

"The Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time"

Iran, and the rest of the Moslem world would run Israel into the Sea if they could.  They would murder every man woman and small child in that country, because the Israelis took a stretch of sand and made it into a garden when THEY couldn't do it in 2000 years.

Also, the Moslem countries over there could all be rich if their leaders spread the wealth of the country around instead of keeping their people poorer than the poorest people in the U.S., then blaming the "rich Jews" for their poverty.
