  1. Shearer could score ANY type of goal. Tap-ins, headers, long range, volleys, penalties, free kicks... he was a threat and scored most of his goals when it mattered: in Competitive games.

Not an overwhealming favourite for this, but I'd say he edges it.

  2. Please pay attention: Sir Bobby Charlton almost never played as a striker!!  He lined-up as either a "deep-lying centre-forward"/AM or as a left-winger for the VAST majority of his playing career, especially when he was representing England.

  3. IMHO Shearer is a contender for the all-time mantle, but he's by no means a "lock" for it.  As an old-fashioned number nine, which was the forward role that Shearer actually played for most of his career, Bill "Dixie" Dean, Tommy Lawton & Nat Lofthouse are all considered his equals, if not his superiors, in playing the position.  Another name that frequently fails to get brought up in this discussion is Blackpool & England great Stan Mortensen.  The likes of Greavsie & Links actually played as out & out strikers, which is a different forward role to where Shearer lined up, so those three are difficult to compare IMO.  It's kind of like asking who was the better England midfielder between Johnny Haynes & "Guvnor" Ince...
& no offence intended to anyone, but Sir Bobby WAS NOT a striker: he played almost his entire Three Lions career as either an attacking/goalscoring MF or as a left-winger.  Charlton almost NEVER lined up for England as an out & out forward.  Thank you for your consideration...
