I'm actually 18 and I had to have one because I've Been having trouble with my BMs. I thought I had hemmoroids so about 6 months ago I went to gastroanerologist referred to me by my aunt. He wanted to do all this stuff I didn't need and he did a rectal exam and told me i didn't have hemmoroids and diagnosed me with IBS. But I knew it was something worse than IBS based on how lightly he described it.

After a while i knew there was somethign wrong with me and i knew i had hemmoroids. So I went to another gasterologist referred to me by my mothers doc office. He was diçk. He would talk really loud in the "private" room and treated me as if i were making it all up. He too did a rectal exam and said that I didn't have hemmoroids He diagnosed me with IBS and sent me on my way.

I was through with him because I knew those two docs were wrong and I was right. So I went to one more doc, this time taken out of the phone book. He only treats 21 and up and with a referral usually but he was nice enough to accept me.

I told him what I thought it was he did a rectal exam and did feel any but believed in me enough that i may have hemmoroids and he suggested to do a colonoscopy.

B4 the colonoscopy i was told that i was to receive a "twilight" pill and then an anesthetic IV. I asked the nurse when I was to ge the twilight pil and she said "pill?, no pill" and then she stuk the anesthetic in my iv.

I thought when is this going to work? I was still awake (luckily it was 9:30 am and I am usually sleeping then so i was already a littel tired) and then I felt them about to stick it in and I was like Oh h**l no do they not kow I can feel that.

Anyway, I was so awake that I had my eyes open and I was talking to them and telling them that I could box them and I also told them that i could run track and beat them I. They got a little panicky and put some other stuff in my IV and I was alright for a little but then they started pushing and everytime they pushed it was awful. It was the worst pain i've felt in a long while.

So was anyone else this awake during their colonscopy?

  2. the meds they gave you were not strong enough you need to tell them and they should have listened to you when that happens you tell them to stop you have rights and you need to say something.

  3. Everyone is awake during their colonoscopy thats the whole point

  4. Sorry you experienced the less than qualified GI.  There are lots out there.  IBS is an easy call for a doctor because it covers a lot of symptoms and is in the code book for getting paid by the insurance company.

As for the question about being awake, not only am I awake; but, I am not sedated at all.  It is a little uncomfortable (pain level 6 or 7 out of 10 at most).  My doctor has to proceed slowly and listen to my feedback.  I find it to be no big deal as I can tolerate discomfort when I know it's temporary and I can get the staff to help me control the pain level through pressure and feedback.

The problem with "twilight" is that you are actually fully aware of the pain throughout the procedure.  If they get it right the Versed kicks in and you forget the entire thing.  It's something like being date raped and not remembering any of the events.

If my doctor screws up and perforates my colon, I will be amongst the first to know it and I'll remember who did it.

  5. I was awake they just numbed me from the waist down like when they give a pregnant woman an epidural.
