  1. As others answerers noted Barry was an Espicopalian HOWEVER by the standards of the Catholic CHurch, the n**i Party and the 700 Club/Evangelical Christians since his Paternal Grandparents were both Jews - - - - well the 'one drop of blood' rule does apply!  It is amusing to note that whereas Republicans in 1964 were tolerant about Goldwaters' ancesrtry the Republicans of 2008 would be less likely to endorse 'one of them,' if anyone wants to contradict me just look at the firestorm surrounding Mitt Romney....

""""Goldwater was born in 1909 in Phoenix, in what was then the Arizona Territory, the son of Baron Goldwater and his wife Hattie Josephine Williams. His father's family had founded Goldwater's, a department store in Phoenix. The family name had been changed from Goldwasser to Goldwater at least as early as the 1860 census in Los Angeles, California. Goldwater's paternal grandparents, Michel and Sarah (Nathan) Goldwasser, were Jewish and had been married in the Great Synagogue of London.[2] Goldwater was raised in his mother's Episcopalian faith, though he referred to himself as "half-Jewish".[3] These details led the Jewish essayist Harry Golden to famously remark of Goldwater, "I have always thought that if a Jew ever became President, he would turn out to be an Episcopalian."[4]"""

  2. Barry Goldwater was an Episcopalian.

  3. He was Episcopalian.  He was christened in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Phoenix, and that is also where his memorial service was.

I don't know why the previous poster thought he was intolerant.  He was practically a Libertarian, and even as a conservative, he upheld rights of g**s and abortion, which put him in hot water with a lot of Christian conservatives.

"The rights that we have under the Constitution covers anything we want to do, as long as its not harmful. I can't see any way in the world that being a g*y can cause damage to somebody else,"  -- Barry Goldwater.

  4. Beats me. But I doubt it. AZ was pretty Intolerant, back in the early '60s -so if He WAS, we would know about it now .
