Was Bobby Jones really a racist pig? Where's the evidence?

Only fuzzy zoeller. Other than that, this is a gentlemans game. You would find way more sexism in golf than racism. Bobby jones was the man.

Who cares.  Time buries these kinds of facts. Look at Elvis, Babe Ruth, etc

He's famous for his golf exploits, no need to drag up anything negative.

I have read a lot of golf history and never heard any such thing about Bobby Jones.  But I think by today's standards just about everyone living below the Mason-Dixon line in 1930 would be considered racist.  Blacks and whites were still segregated at that time and the South was more strict about it than in the Northern States.

The fact that Lee Elder in 1974 was the first black to be allowed to compete in The Masters is one case in point. There were very capable black pros before that, Charlie Sifford being among them. Also, Augusta National did not have a black member until 1994.

I'm sure there were many racist folks in golf (as well as every other professional sport), then and now. Horton Smith (the first winner of the Masters and president of the PGA for a time)  had well documented issues with Bill Spiller when he attempted to get into PGA tournaments in the late 40's and 50's.

At the same time, calling Bobby Jones a racist pig might be taking it a bit too far. His accomplishments and contributions to the game of golf are undeniable.
