Was Boycott talking through his hat?

Yesterday Ashish B posted a question concerning Boycott's remarks regarding Ricky Ponting.As I didn't have this info then, I didn't give a complete answer to the Q. I have a list of the top six batsmen of all time, from the publication 'Cricket Skills & Practice' , edited by Ken Piesse, which gives lie to Boycott's sour grapes assessment of Ponting 'not being in Lara & Tendulkar's league'.The six top batsmen of all time are

1.Don Bradmen

2.J.Hobbs

3.Ricky Ponting

4.Graeme Pollock

5Sachin Tendulkar

6.Victor Trumper.

So, do you agree Boycot is a tool/fool/ bitter has-been?Just as a matter of Interest, the article also calculated the successes of winning captains (qualification of 30 tests) percentage of winning.

Ricky Ponting,76%

Steve Waugh 71%

Mike Brearly 58%

Viv Richards 54%

Mark Taylor 52%

Ian Chappell 50%.

Does this not show that far from being an also ran, Ponting is the most successful ever Captain & 3rd best batsman?

i believe him ~ ponting is no Lara or sachin.he is little lower order batsman than those 2 ....Lol~

Well i don't look at stats to often, but iv grown up with Boycotts comments ,and hes a tough no nonsense Yorkshire man ,that sometimes goes against the grain of some authorities ,hes old school ,and been around the block ,and played the game at the highest level so he knows what hes talking about....but i have to say i agree with most off what hes says ..and in this case i also agree with him

Boycott is a parrot, he likes the sound oiff his own voice.

Ricky Ponting has a higher avg than Tendulkar, Lara and Boycott himself, thats not inferior, the word is SUPERIOR.

I keep reading the excuse that Ponting hasnt had to face McGrath,Warne,Lee etc. If thats the case then the rest of the world has to pull its finger out and develop some class bowlers and in that argument it can been seen that Warne is a supeior bowler to Murali, you cant have it both ways.

I do not think it really matters what Boycott says.  Regardless of all the statistics Boycott is entitled to his opinion and that is all it is: an opinion.

Bradman once said that Sachin was the one batsman who reminded him of himself (making the Sachin fans very happy - and they still hold on to this certificate)

In turn Sachin said Jayasuriya is the  best batsman he has ever seen (and this makes Jayasuriya fans elated)

The point is; it never stops.  The wheel keeps going round and all this while it is merely an opinion.

A captain and a batsman's purpose is to play and win.  Ponting has done this more admirably than most other players. That is all matters.

I honestly think Lara,Tendulkar and Viv Richards are more iconic and are in  a different class,Ponting is good, a match winner but he hasn't proved he can take apart the bowling in all conditions against all opposition. Richards was arrogant and he played like he was the best, Lara was a genius and he only got better as situation got tougher and Tendulkar is the little master with all the shots in the book and then some more.

Ponting cannot be compared to them, none of his innings are as memorable as some of theirs.

Look I'm not turning green or anything,I like Ponting but most would not compare him with Lara or Tendulkar.

GB is an opinionated, stubborn,selfish man i.e. a Yorkshire man.  He was and still is obsessed with records; firstly his own which he manically pursued to the detriment of his team and now other people's records.  He has a very skewed view of the cricket world and so it is unsurprising his current pronouncements and views do not surprise.  Prat!!

Ashish said it because he feared Ponting will take over Sachin's record and will consider better batsman which Indians can not digest remember when Sachin was not rated as the 5 best cricketers of the millennium by Wisdon, Indian people and media criticized it saying its racial, so whenever Indians say that Ponting is stupid or other things it means they are intimated by Ricky.

Ricky is far better than Sachin when he scores century Australia wins 90% of matches where Sachin's century wins India only 59% of matches not to mention ricky scored lot of runs as captain where Sachin could not perform when he was captain and step down. maybe Ricky is not as stylish as Sachin but he is as good batsman. He might not have records like Sachin and Lara but because he plays for the team he has missed many century because of boosting run rate where Lara and Sachin always sacrifice team's 20 30 runs just to get century

I agree with DX

Ashish and many other Indians are scared that Ponting will break Sachin's record. First people said that he will never be able to break his records and now when he is close they say that Stats don't really matter. Boycott is a very big fool

And don't mind if any Indian points such things out because some Indians also say that Sachin is greater than Bradman

Ponting is the most successful 3rd batsman ever. You expained it very nicely far better than Boycott

I didn't answer the Q yesterday as he has me blocked, but its good to see someone pick up on it. People on here at times post opinions by tossers such as Boycott and put them forward as Gospel. Well old Boycott wouldnt be my first choice of fair comment, he still has a bee in his bonnet after all these years against Aussie teams who successfully whipped his a-s. And lets not forget how he did a runner from cricket for a long period to avoid crossing paths with Lillee & Thommo, Talk about yellow streaks!lol

The user above me has put it well, just check Newfy's answer. What part of Lies don't you understand Newfy? Boycott is a tool, always has been.The fact you don't check stats gives you no credibility here Newfy, we're supposed to answer truthfully & to the best of our knowledge when answering Qs.

well we all know Boycott regularly talks thru his rump, a bit like being the english version of Greg Matthews, except some people have some respect for geoffery

personally, i dont agree with him, but its just his opinion, i'm not gonna get all worked up over it
