  1. If Mulroney was a red Tory God help us. He was as blue as blue can be. Joe Clark was a Red Tory as was Flora MacDonald.NAFTA hardly qualifies as socialistic (ask John Turner). The GST was NOT introduced in the 1930s and had nothing to do with WWI or WWII (Ask Jean Chretien).

As a final suggestion ask Karl Heinz Schriber what kind of a Tory dear Brian was

  2. I'm with the "blues" - Mulroney was a blue tory.

  3. In opposition to the earlier post: Mulroney was a red Tory. He DID NOT introduce GST, that was introduced in the 1930's as part of the war effort, and as a conservative he would be motivated to cut GST not create it. He is mainly red for taking progressive (and some argue not wanted/needed) steps to bring free trade to Canada by signing NAFTA

  4. In the sense of red=embarrassed and blue=down, he must be a bit of both.

  5. A red tory is characterized as the left wing section of the Conservative party, or a Conservative who is committed to the welfare state and/or semi-liberal social policy. This is basically the left of the right-wing.

Blue tories tend to be members of the former Progressive Conservative Party of Canada and current Conservative Party of Canada who are more ideologically right wing, and believe in more mainstream neoconservative ideas (e.g. reduced role of government in the economy, reduction of taxation). This is basically the right of the right-wing.

Brian Mulroney was a blue tory. Although Brian Mulroney introduced the GST, which would NOT be characterized as blue tory, he did this because Canada was suffering from national debt, and by doing so, he would be able to reduce it. This successful attempt at avoiding trade deficits is considered to be blue tory. Furthermore, his desire to align our foreign policy with American foreign policy and the introduction of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), established him as a true Blue Tory.
