He was "blacklisted" during the 50's for stating a group known as the House Unamerican Activities Committee and named a fellow folk singer Pete Seeger and others as possible Communists.  But remember back then the whole country was communist-paranoid and whatever he did say could have been easily construed as having multiple meanings.  Only the witnesses to this actual event know the what really happened as this event was not recorded except by word of mouth.
