It's possible, the portuguese were the first europeans to have a major and very strong presence in India, they had colonies there from 1500 to 1960, the territories of Daman, Diu and especially Goa. Besides that they controlled most of India's harbor cities for close to 200 years. They also had the particularity of, unlike the english, mingle and marry with the natives, there are many people from India with portuguese ancestry and it's not surprising that Ghandi also had it.
