Was Jack Johnson ever considered a "good" suffer with potential in the surfing community before his departure?

Jack was a Quiksilver team rider so my guess was that he was (and is) pretty good.

What do you mean "before his departure"?  Im sure he still surfs and is very good.  He grew up on the North Shore of Ouahu with some of the world's best breaks in his back yard.  Alot of his childhood and adolescent friends have become some of the worlds best and most famous surfers (Kelly Slater, Rob Machado ect.).  Im sure that growing up in this enviorment that he was pretty d**n good at surfing
