The press always loved him, it's true, and he did handle the Cuban Missile Crisis nicely...but there was also the Bay of Pigs fiasco, and that book he didn't write, and the fact that he slept with Marilyn Monroe, and...

So maybe.

Somewhat over-rated. He was one of seven Presidents I served under. He gets high marks for handling the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. But, he allowed the East Germans to construct the Berlin Wall when one U.S. Army Engineer outfit could have torn it down without starting a war. The Soviets would not have backed the East Germans, because Germany is not part of "Holy Mother Russia".

He also set a course for the country which cost us dearly in blood and treasure when he asserted, during his Inaugural speech, that we would "...pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty..".

Noble words indeed. But, we don't seem to be prepared to do that some 40+ years later. Witness the partisan bickering about our operations in Iraq.

When he died, there were 51 legislative proposals gathering dust in his in-box. Within six months, his successor had gotten them made law. So, with a large majority from his own party in both houses of the Congress, he didn't seem able to put his stamp on the nation.

He was the first one in a long line of presidents, who started a useless war and changed the opinion of the world against USA. Assassination made him a hero. And : Clinton was his poor copy ( talking about affairs ).

He had potential, but never had a fair chance to show us one way or the other. Arguments are made for sides, sadly, we will never truly know.
