that was something along the lines of lego, but it had to have tools to build it

Meccano was my favourite.

The Telegraph survey was from 1973 onwards  and i think Meccano was all the rage several years prior to that date and that is maybe why it didnt feature in their lists.

Guess its only the oldies that remember Meccano!

I would rate Lego as second best though.

Mmm mine was actually Barbie.

I never owned legos but when I was playing with them if someones else had them I loved them.

My favorite was an Erector Set.

It had a three speed electric motor and a winch. Wheels pulleys and gears.

One of my favourites. I used to spend hours buildings houses. I wanted to be an architect :-)

I preferred Lincoln Logs myself.  My kids liked Legos.  Owww!

It really hurt when you stepped on them.
