Linnaeus adhered rigidly to the idea that each species must be identified by a set of names, which he termed “genus” and “species”.Although Linnaeus was primarily a botanist, he produced a comprehensive list of all organisms then known worldwide. His list consisted of approximately 7,700 plant and 4,400 animal species.

  1. No he tried to simplify and structure the classification into the binomial standard. The common dog rose went from its several confusing names like Rosa sylvestris inodora seu canina & Rosa sylvestris alba *** rubore, folio glabro to the succinct Rosa canina under Linnaeus's system.

Aristotle simply classified things as plants or animals. It was Pliny the Elder whose book came down to European scholars as a real botanical in his Historia Naturalis that covered categories like vines, fruit trees, forest trees, exotic trees, medicinal plants in many categories, metals and gems.
