those days ships travel by sails and it takes about five days to sail from Cebu to where Lapu-lapu is the sultan. The current mactan island is so near to cebu. Besides their were no proofs that the battle between lapu-lapu and magellan happened in mactan island. like hull of wooden ships, swords, sheilds, bones from warrior legs, etc.

  1. Yes, Magellan was killed in Mactan Island which is part of Cebu province.  The island is just a bridge away from the province so Magellan and his men did not have to travel or sail far. Anyway, they could not get near the shore because of the rocky outcroppings of the small island. The famous Battle of Mactan, where Lapulapu killed Magellan, was chronicled by Antonio Pigafetta.  Anyway, it is surmised that the dead body of Magellan may have been thrown back into the sea to be eaten by the fishes or, buried somewhere.  Who would have thought at that time that the battle would make history?  If it were, I guess Lapulapu would have preserved Magellan's body for the next generations as a testimony to the bravery of the Filipinos, more specifically the Cebuanos, in fighting against foreign aggression.

  2. I love watching the History Channel:

The best proof is the writings of  the italian Pigafetta, who joined Magellan's expedition and was among the very few who made it to the Philippines and back to Spain. Just last week, in cable, there is a special feature on Magellan and scholars affirm talk about this story.

From Mexico, after traversing the dangerous straits (thereinafter called the Magellan strait), they finally reach the elusive WEST, a peacful and sunny ocean which Magellan then and there named "El Madre Pacifico___"

(thus pacific ocean). But their journey has not yet ended, they sailed for months, missing the tiny islands of the pacific and finally reach Guam. But they were looted by the local chamorros and the next day Magellan retaliated and burned their town and the 3 remaining galleons fled.

They reach our country and dock at cebu. After almost 2 years at sea, one can imagine the overwhelming emotion and spirit of Magellan: now he can bring home gold/spices, expand the kingdom of Spain as promised to the young King Charles and of course also spread the faith (The Native chieftain was friendly and they were accommodated and allowed Magellan to share the Christian faith. Magellan must have not only felt overwhelmed, but also invincible. When the chieftain (sorry his name skips my mind at the moment---homonhon? or is it the name of the place in Cebu? sorry) warned him that the neighboring island's leader is not as friendly, Magellan wanted to show the indio natives who's boss. He gathered 65 men to attack Lapu-Lapu in Mactan. He was welcomed by hundreds of Men w/ arrows and swords. Magellan is killed. 1 of the 3 galleons were burned, 2 scampered out of the islands.

along the Cape of Good Hope (?) one of the 2 remaining ships were spotted by a Portugese ship (they ruled this part of the world, competing with th English and the Dutch, that is why Spain had to find another route to the indies--tedious westward). The ship got was cornered and the men were arrested.

Elcano, now captain of the last surviving ship, once just among the many officers of Magellan's expedition, was honored as the first to circumnavigate the world. Writer Pigafetta was luckily on that ship that made it back.

  3. i don't think so. the waters in pinaglabanan in mactan are deep. no proofs that the battle happened.

i know another place called mactang, with a "g". its in an island near cebu. when i went there, i saw big hulls of wooden ships, swords and shields. the people said that their are also leg-bones w/c are longer compaired to the bones in our legs. w/c means they are taller than us. tha waters are not deep. i think those hulls of wooden ships are still there. the shields and swords were taken by the LGU for keeps.

i think mactang is the place where magellan was killed.

  4. yes as per recorded by the historians but if you wanna go ahead and speculate go right ahead its a free country...
