Question:

Was McCain's speech simply uninspiring?

It had some high points, but mostly a yawner. I don't know about anyone but I am totally worn out on hearing about McCain's P.O.W. stories and military experience. It has little to do with running a country. They overplayed it in this convention and by the time McCain got to himself, lol, it was an exhausted topic of discussion. People like me were more interested in how he is going to improve or fix the serious problems that we now face in this country. He should have spent more time on that. I think that will be a topic in the news tomorrow as a legitimate criticism of the speech. What do you think?

  1. Its past his bedtime...cut him some slack. All of the superficial patriotic overkill probably put him half to sleep.

  2. I think it was good. The Republicans, as a whole, have been too insulting towards the Democrats (remember, they need some Dems to cross party lines). McCain managed to excite the Republicans without alienating any independents. Then again, I haven't been glued to the TV watching the convention.

Here's my (minor) criticism. What's with McCain's facial expressions? It seems like he has the urge to smile at inappropriate moments, and tries and fails to suppress it, making him look like he's smirking. Then, when a part of his speech calls for a smile, he's unable to give a genuine one.

  4. Well, if he were to cover every topic, he'd still be talking now. The point of it was to introduce him to the American Public, get an idea of the mans character, and a description of where he wants the country to go in the future, as well as a brief overview on the subjects. I think they accomplished that. For real in depth issues on the how and why, you can check out his web site, or wait until the debates. Don't wait for the tv to spoon feed you the info, do some research on your own.

  5. As an independent looking at the speech:

I agree, I worry about being too enthusiastic about military suffering - yes he can be proud, but let's not take the country into a comparable condition! (It shouldn't be the main focus.)

The thing I found interesting about the speech, was that though he said hardly anything intentionally, he does reveal a recurring theme:

How many times does he mention fighting?

How many times does he mention results?

  6. Yes it was, but if you ask me, so too was Obamas despite the crowd of adoring fans. The problem is, these speeches are just preaching to the choir, telling people already convinced of who they are going to vote for what they want to hear. I promise you if either McCain or Obama got specific in these speeches they would do nothing but lose support... it's impossible to clap and cheer someone who is suggesting something you think will end up costing you, so they talk in generalities and we hear what works for us, and everyone is happy.

The last person who tried to explain U.S. problems to Americans using real information instead of just platitudes (Ross Perot) was a bit of a wing nut but he got 1/3 of the votes too. There's a group of us out there who don't care about Democrat or Republican, we want people with plans, and we want to know those plans in detail because we know the devil is always in the details.

As a nation, we need to get beyond voting for candidates based on their speeches and start voting for them based on what they have actually accomplished and how well they develop and execute plans. We need to start expecting our want-to-be leaders to lay out well detailed plan, in advance, that can be scrutinized like a big company annual report. "Change is coming" is nonsense talk and anyone who gets excited about hearing it is a fool. "Tomorrow is coming" too...so too is Christmas. Obama and McCain are saying the same things... "Vote for me if you want change". How about some numbers and plans to back that up? Real facts please not "Im going to lower taxes, increase employment, increase your libido, and lower your cholesterol"...

Inspiring speeches make you feel good for an evening. Well thought out and detailed action plans that are actually executed will make you feel good for many years... nobody but Hillary even came close to laying out a detailed plan for what she would attempt to do and she was pushed aside for someone who promised "change".

And so you know - I WASNT a Hillary fan but I have to give her credit for at least laying out a detailed plan on her website.

s***w speeches I say, show me the money.

  7. i watched part of mccains speach, i think he has good intentons just leading the country in the wrong direction. Not too interested in Sarah Palin talking about hockey moms , lipstick and pit bulls... we need  a  president ready to deal with the real issues...
