It was pure strategy. He couldn't pick Romney or Leiberman because he would have alienated the evangelical Christians. For that reason he also couldn't pick another more moderate woman. However, he also couldn't pick Huckabee because then he would alienate moderate Independents. By choosing an uber-conservative female he brings in the loony-tunes conservative evangelicals and by choosing a woman he gives the illusion of change that will bring in Independents.

It will back-fire on him, however.

I just saw what Romney had said about him on youtube.com & the man really did speak the truth about McCain. He was thinking they had to get someone corrupt who will be afraid to tell the truth when she sees what the crooks are doing.
