  3. A thin strip of land on the eastern coast, called the "tidal zone" was under water for short periods of time, 300 years ago.  Also river and lake beds.

  4. First, North Carolina has two major geographic regions; the mountains and the coastal plains.

Here in Florida, over 60% of the land mass is considered coastal lowlands and prior to the last ice age (20 to 12 thousand years ago) much of it was under water also.  So if you are referring to that coastal area then it probably was.  So now that the ice age has come and gone why aren't these lowlands once again inundated?

The answer is that we still have the north and south poles and many glaciers; at least for now.  The seas did not rise to the same levels they were before the ice age and thus those shallow water areas that were exposed at low water have become the parts of many great states.

For a comparison, I live on Florida's west coast near Sarasota/Venice.  Prior to the last Ice Age all this area was under water and composed of sand dunes, sand bars and beaches.  During the Ice age the coastline was west of here over 100 miles, then after the ice age we have our coastal lowlands and the all too famous Florida Beaches.

In fact, Florida (and probably most of the eastern seaboard) has had at least 8 distinct shorelines in their recent geologic past. For Florida that is just a million years.

We have had many ice ages and many sea level fluctuations.
