Should we expect the Presidential candidate to know everything about the running mate they select?

  1. Evidently not.

    Eagleton was kind of the turning point where serious vetting was done on prospective VP candidates.

    As to the first answerer's comment that people today wouldn't care if a candidate had been to a psychiatrist, you  should remember only 20 years ago when it was revealted that Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis has been to a councilor during his wife's battle with alchoholism. It did severe damage to his candidicy. I am not sure much has changed since then.

    To be fair, also, Eagleton had undergone electroconvolusive shock therapy which is indicative of a much more severe mental problem then situational depression like Dukakis had.


  2. I believe he was but people back then were not accepting of anyone who'd been to a shrink. Now it would not be a big deal.
