Was anyone else proud when their cat caught their first mouse?

I came down late one night for a snack. My cat was laying on top of my shoe. I went over to look to see what he was doing, because sometimes he leaves his toys in my shoes. I saw something gray in there, and thought it was a ball. I reached in, picked it up to throw it, and recoiled in shock when it was warm and furry.

It was disgusting.

And I was proud.

  1. I do not have mice but I get sewer roaches. I am proud that he gets them and I do not have to kill them.

  2. yes i gave my kittens toy mice to play with when hey were younger but because we have birds natually u get mice come for the seed and when i sore my cat throwing this mouse around i thort it was so cute plus its the naturall thing for a cat to do at least i dont have to put rat sack around any more

  3. PROUD??? hopefully your cat has been vacinated against rabies not to mention all the other sick and dirty diseases that mice carry...I would keep my cat inside the house not let it out to get dirty and death threatning diseases that animals outside could carry

  4. Lovely.  No, I've never experienced this.  My cats are indoor only and my home isn't rodent-infested.

  5. Unfortunately not! As I felt sad seeing the poor tiny mouse dead, it was still warm and soft poor thing, I just hope it didnt suffer too much.

  6. I'm glad to hear that you have an indoor only cat.  I would still be worried about your cat getting mice.  if you find this happening more you should call the exterminator

  7. I always praise my cats for their conquests, be it mouse, bird, lizard, or whatever.  I do my best to save the life of whatever they bring in, but I still praise them for being mighty hunters, and thank them for sharing with the rest of the family.

  8. I always praise the cats at my parents house when they bring something.  It makes them feel proud and happy.  They are mainly porch cats so they hunt in the wooded area right behind my parents house. When they get a pesky squirrel or chipmunk, I am proud.  Mice are small game to them.  They have brought us less pleasant things such as snakes and a rabbit once.  They are all healthy and get their boosters yearly.

Now MY cats in my apartment have only ever gotten 1 mouse and it wasn't a proud moment.  They managed to break into a glass mouse enclosure and kill my favorite fancy mouse.  Needless to say it was devastating!

I completely understand how you can get mice in an older house.  I have experienced myself at my parents house. A couple of mice are not an infestation.  And they easily find their ways into most attics in the winter no matter how new your house is.  When I was a child we burnt wood, and the mice would sneak in the house on the wood. Our cat who is now 16 always took care of them for us.

As long as a cat is healthy and vaccinated, I say let them hunt!  Its their instinct, and we can't take that out of them.

  9. About 2years ago, on ash Wednesday, a ~6month old very feral cat ran into my house and under my bed.  There she stayed for about 2weeks where I slipped her food, water, and fresh litter.  Little by little "Ashley" decided to come out and meet us.

But she was still not a calm, pleasant cat to be around.  And I already had 3 others and a dog in a very small place.   This new kitty was very unexpected and I felt really bad for her.   She was not one to place or find a home for - too feral.  Yet I was really struggling with the thought of putting her outside again. (I live by a main highway).   My parents offered to let me release her on their farm.

This sounded like a nice idea.  Ashley was spayed. I could tell because her ear tip was cut/marked as if a catch and release group had recently done it.  And she was not adapting well to being handled.  Still,  I was feeling uncertain and guilty.  Farm life is hard at my parent's place.  Cats disappear quickly and I could not help wondering why this cat chose MY house to run into for safety.

The day I was to release her,  I was in the shower and said a prayer.  In my prayer I specifically  asked  for help with my decision.  I begged for a sign that showed me whether or not she should stay with me.  Just 1 sign, that is all I asked for...

Well,  needless to say - When I walked into my room from the shower, there she was.  Sitting there with a mouse in the middle of the floor and just looking up at me.  She let out this LOUD meow.  And I knew.  I  actually cried.  I never questioned it again.

That cat is still a bit wild but never leaves my side.  It has almost come to the point of eeire....   xoxo

I hope you liked the story.  It is true.  Thanks for giving me an opportunity to share it.
