Was dropping Honors Geography/Economics for Jazz band worth it?

I dropped my Honors Geography/Economics for Jazz Band this year and now I'm wondering if it was worth it. My band teacher is looking for some good Tenor Saxes so I volunteered. And it's killing me because I don't know if I made the right decision or not!

  1. I say that yes, it was worth it.  First, it is very important to get a well-rounded educational experience.  High school should not revolve entirely around academics.  Jazz band will teach you valuable life skills (i.e. socialization, achieving short/long term goals, etc.) that a class in geography/economics may not.

Secondly, when you apply to colleges, they look at your entire high school career.  This includes academics but they also look at clubs or extracurricular activities that you were involved in.  They want to have well-rounded students at their college.

I say relax and enjoy your jazz band experience!!  You may not have another chance to do something like it!

  2. Tell your dad you are getting socialization that you don't get in school.  You need to do things in the public so you are better able to handle the pressures of college.  If you are sorry you skipped the class take it next year.  If it is to late for that, talk to the honors class teacher He/she may be willing to give you some outside work for no credit.  But you would keep up with the information that you would have gotten during the class.  It doesn't hurt to have a little fun either.

  3. Part of high school is the experience, and jazz band is going to give you something no classroom ever could. Do not beat yourself up. If you really think that honors geo/eco is going to make a difference on your college application, how about taking Economics or Geography at a local college in the evening and earning some credits right now? You're fine. There are lots of colleges looking for well-rounded students. Who knows, you might even earn a band scholarship!

  4. You really never can really answer that.  Sure your dropped a class that may have something to do with a major that you may end up changing once you get to college, but band is an activity that will be looked positively upon.

  5. As a geography teacher and musician, I would say the choice is not easy! By dropping Honors Geography, does this mean you will have no geography class at all throughout high school? Our world is so small and interconnected today that it will be a real handicap not having some understanding of it. But that's not to say you need the honors class. On the other hand, Jazz Band is a wonderful experience , and it offers potential opportunities to play (and even make money) throughout your life.  I think Jazz Band would actually look better on your resume for college applications, especially since you're not going into something like international studies. Anyone can take a course, but your college may be looking for someone to keep their band going. However, it would be good to fit some kind of geography studies into your curriculum before you graduate, but it's really not a critical decision. Relax & enjoy the band.
