  1. No. Elizabeth Backwell is of English descent. She was born in Bristol, England, the third of nine children born to a sugar refiner, named Samuel Blackwell. In 1832, the family immigrated to the United States, and set up a refinery in New York City, and the Blackwell's family then moved to Cincinnati. Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman to graduate from medical school (M.D.) and a pioneer in educating women in medicine.

  2. Elizabeth Blackwell's father's interest in the anti-slavery movement brought the Blackwell family to the United States; however, this early feminist was not of African descent, nor did she ever claim US citizenship.  Nevertheless, after the Blackwell family moved to the US in 1832, she became the first woman to earn an M. D. from a US medical college.

In 1869, Dr. Blackwell permanently returned to her native England whereupon she and Florence Nightingale opened a women's medical college one year after she opened a similar school for American women in New York.
