  2. In 1927, an idea was born when two men, named John Tyler and Thomas Leavey, started the Farmers Automobile Insurance Exchange in Los Angeles.

    They both came from farming families, and recognized that people who lived on the farm or in small towns were safer drivers than people in big cities. As a result, they believed that lower- risk drivers shouldn't have to pay as much for their auto insurance.
