Question:

Was forgiven. Now what?

I bullied a guy in high school. Years later I realized the damage I caused and asked for his forgiveness. Needless to say he refused. However a year later, through his sister, (now a friend to me and my wife), he asked to talk to me before our high school reunion and we met over lunch. I did what others here advised me and I let him speak. I listened and he told me about his life since school, his struggles with our bullying, and how several of his close friends helped him through everything. I then poured my heart out and told him that I was stupid, and immature, and that I've changed and would never be the way I once was. I told him that I was extremely sorry and regret everything. After everything was said and done, he shook my hand, looked me in the eye, and said he forgave me! I haven't seen him since then. I really want to continue to make it up to him, and be his friend. Should I stop with his forgiveness, or try to hang out with him at the reunion. It is next week.

  1. trying to buddy up with him after the fact could just be adding insult to injury...

im sure if hes intrested in being friends, he'll come to you.

  2. Accept his forgiveness.

At the reunion, be sure you speak to him.  Don't try to suck up and don't continue with the apologies.  How about something like, "It is good to see you here, and I am so glad we're meeting under better circumstances than where we were in high school."

The ball is now in his court.  Let him make any further overtures toward friendship.
