Are there any downsides to using a universal remote (a fairly cheap one) as a replacement for the lost original?

  1. It's WISER to invest in the original remote control.....

While your universal may work, if you ever need service on your TV set, the TV TECH may ask where your original remote control is....

That's because the internal Service menu can only be accessed using the original JVC remote control....

And if he can't ACCESS the service menu, then your repair becomes either expensive, or your TV becomes UNREPAIRABLE.....

And it's awful to see a TV set get thrown away, because the TV Tech can't access the service menus....remember, remote controls do eventually become obsolete and no longer available, so that's why I suggest getting it NOW instead of 2 years from now....

Universal remotes cannot access the menus.....

  2. If the TV is relatively simple, a universal remote should be OK. If it has a variety of special functions, like PIP, or many different inputs, you may not be able to find an inexpensive remote that will perform all the actions you need.
