Was governor Huey Long almost dictatorial over Louisiana?

I read somewhere that governor Huey Long had almost absolute control over the Louisiana government.

Are there any other governors that are like him?

  1. he also made the bridge in baton rouge across the ms river two short for ships to get under hoping for baton rouge to become the center of commerce in the south, not really fair, but smart

  2. Yes many governors are that way because of the one party dominated states

  3. no but hitler was

  4. Populist Huey Long successfully defeated the Democratic politcal machine the "Cherokee club" which was the equivalent of New York's Tamminy Hall, which ruled Louisiana and kept state power and patronidge in the hands of a few.   To do this once by hook or crook he placed cronies and sympathizers in key politcal positions.  But he was no more or no less dictatorial or corrupt than any other Govenor of that era.  What made him unique was his success at taking on entrenched politcal machines and through flamboyent speeches appealed directly to the disenfranchised poor (including blacks).   He rewarded their loyalty with free school books for children, new roads and taxing big businesses which otherwise paid only bribes to state officials.

  5. i head louisiana was a adictatorship but not now
