Was ho chi minh a bad guy?

i still dont completely understand... im Australian vietnamese, my family comes from HUE ( central vietnam )

MY understanding about vietnam war BEFORE researching was.....

Viet-kong (north viet army) chasing and power control of vietnam slowly took over middle and south vietnam by FORCE. people who did not join them where jailed, killed, tortured, raped. they where forced to follow there regime and rules using fear. this is definitely a bad thing , this destroyed many lives and families and no mercy was shown to people who opposed viet-kong.



MY OPINION BEFORE RESEARCH was viet-kong (north) where a terrible group killing and torturing people, using fear and murder as a weapon to gain power and control over vietnam.



HO CHI MINH - before i researched i thought HCM was simply a highly respected person that stood up for vietnamese peoples rights and so on .... and thought he also represented south vietnam during the war ( non viet-kong )

i pretty sure iam completely wrong! Ho Chi Minh was the leader of the democracy of Vietnam (North) during the war, until 1969, his death. i assume being leader of north vietnam, he is in control of viet-kong! some information about him tells me he was a man of honor and wisedom, unselfish not seeking power and highly respectable. Assuming his the leader of north vietnam(viet-kong) why did he force communism over the rest of vietnam by killing and murdering ??? isnt this a bad thing ???



MY UNDERSTANDING AND OPINION ( correct me if im wrong, im seeking information, sorry if i offend anyone )

North Vietnam (viet-kong) lead by HoChiMinh wanted the whole of vietnam to be a communist country. their communist regime wasnt agreed upon by all of vietnam, especially the republic of vietnam (south vietnam) ???  anyways.. north ( viet-cong ) lead by HCM wanted to "UNITE" the rest of vietnam with this new regime and used MURDER and FEAR to force the vietnamese CIVILIANS!!!!!!!! to follow there regime. recruiting people using FEARand killing anyone who opposed viet-cong. the Republic of vietnam (south) like many vietnamese people didnt like the communist regime, and also didnt like vietcong murdering people. South vietnam made a stand and fought the viet-cong for many years. Americans jumped in to help stop the war but North Vietnam(vietcong) wanted to control Vietnam so continued fighting. americans allied the South and fought against the Vietcong.



is this correct ? Hochiminh may have been highly respected and wise but why the f**k did he murder and kill so many families? surely UNITING vietnam could of been archieved without so much civilians being killed and families tortured and living in FEAR ??? vietcong murdered many civilians... CIVILIANS!! why would someone do that, and how would that unify the country?
