Greg and Phuong are spending the day cycling. Greg averages 14 miles per hour and Phuong averages 18 miles per hour. They start at the same point on the trail at the same time, however they set off in opposite directions. After how long will they be 208 miles apart?

  1. if i read the question right

they will only be 208 miles apart for a second or so

that is if they keep cycling and don't stop at 208 miles apart

or do you have to read and refine your question

  2. 6.5 hours

Assuming the trail is a straight line....

    The formula is 14x + 18x = 208, where x = hours

    add them up and  32x = 208

Divide both sides by 32 to get  x= 208/32

and the answer is 6.5 hours

DAVID M - the question reads just fine. "After how long will they be 208 miles apart". So, how much time elapses before they reach 208 miles apart. If the question had read "FOR how long are they 208 miles apart" then your assertions may have relevence. And the answer would be "T tends to 0" (or, the smallest amount of time measurable seeing as though they are in constant motion)

Perhaps you should "refine" your answer?
