I just started this new job about a week and a half ago and last Saturday they fired me. They told me they didn't have to give a reason as to why they fired me. I mean everything was going fine. I finally got it out of them as it why they fired me and they said it was just to cut costs. Can someone fire you to cut costs?

  1. Read your employment contract it probably states that your employment is at-will and no reason needs to be given if your employment is ceased.  That's the way it works at most companies in the US.

  2. Yes, they can. Plenty of people are fired because the company they work for needs to spend less money. Sorry.

  3. But you can also call the better business bureau and sue them for not giving you a reason as to why they fired you. They don't have to know your old job told you. I was fired for no reason and the BBB investigated it right away and I getting payed for not working. I live in L.A california though. Getting unemployment money at the time they fired me. They had to pay!

  4. Sure they can, my company just axed 20% of my office citing department consolidation.

  5. In some states they can fire you without a reason, you must be in one of those states.

  6. yes they can unfortunately.  With the way things are now, most companies are doing it. You should be able to collect unemployment until you find another job. Good Luck!

  7. not sure i know you can be laid off. then you can collect unemployment. but i guess they can do what ever they want.

  8. Yes they can fire you on an ROF (Reduction of Force) if it is a right to work state like New Mexico they do not have to give you a reason.

  9. Most states are an "employment at will" state..which means they can fire you for any reason and no reason.  However, policies vary from company to company in large corporations as to what a manager can and cannot do.

Since you were there such a very short period of time, you also will not be elidgible for unemployment from them...

Check out the Employment Security website for your state, and the corporate website for the company you worked for..if they are large enough to have one.

  10. Could you just quit for more money?

    Of course you could.

  11. yeah it happens all the time its called layoffs

  12. From what I know, within a probationary period, which is anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months, a company may fire anyone without reason.  That is why, as a hiring manager, I was so careful to be sure that I made it my business to be sure my new hires were doing what I hired them to do.  Otherwise, if they were still on the payroll past their probationary period, I had to find 'good cause' to let them go.

Try not to make a big deal about it and just move on and find a new job.  I presume, since you stated it was on a Sunday, that this was either a food service position or retail.  There are tons of those jobs out there...go find a new one!

  13. When you start a new job, that early in your employment anyone can fire you unless you signed a contract then its different.

But yes, trying to cut costs is a reason to fire someone (be laid off)
