Question:

Was it the wine? My poor cooktop...24 hours later?

Last night I spilled a full glass of wine all over the top of my GE Profile cooktop. As I was wiping and mopping up the wine from around the control k***s, I noticed the "On" light was lit up, but no burners were switched on, nor did any feel warm or hot to the touch. Later last night I noticed the light flickered a bit, but continually stayed lit up. Even after making supper, the light is still lit. Did I short something out? And if I did, do I need to worry about it? Or can I just ignore it perpetually?

And it was such a waste of a good Riesling!

Any help is appreciated.

  1. Yes you have shorted something. Cook tops are made to get wet from cleaning but not having large quantities of liquids on them. The wine must have gone under the control k***s and made contact with some electrical component. If you can remove the k***s and the panel under them, clean up as much as you can. A shop vac will be good if you have one. From there you'll have to wait until the remaining liquid evaporates. I'd say you have a good chance of it working after a day or so as the flickering is an indication that the thing hasn't completely burned out, and some of the liquid was already evaporated. If none of that works then it's time for a service call.
