Question:

Was it wrong to bet my straight-flush?

i was playing no-limit texas hold-em and i got ragged on by several players at the table.

here's what happened:

there was 3 players in the hand and the flop was

6spades 8spades 9spades

i had pocket 7s(with the spade)

there was big bets and both stayed in for the turn.

the turn came: 10spades!

i made a straight flush. someone checked and i bet out.

i got one caller.

the river came up a blank.

and i bet again but the guy folded.

i showed my straight flush, and everyone laughed, but the two guys said i made a stupid play by betting it on the turn.

i disagreed because there was already a four card flush, so i figured the remaining hands wernt going to improve. i was hoping the guy had an ace of spades and it turned up that he had a set.

i think betting on the river would be the same as betting on the turn...because of the way the board was.

any thoughts?

  1. This is a tough question and a good one.

This depends on the players in the hand and your reputation at the table.  If your image was that you were a tight player then the bet was a bad one.  If you believed that there was an ace of spades in the hand and that person was going to raise the turn,  then this was a great bet.

In some ways checking could have induced a bet and a call from the other players at that time you could smooth call with the stone cold nuts...and then bet the river for value...

What are the chances both players would bet heavy on a 3 flushed board and not have an ace of spades...sounds like those guys over played something like two red kings or jacks.  It is possible also that one guy had a set so too bad the board didn't pair on the river...

Again this really depends on your image, if your a loose player the bet is great...tight bad...a check may induce more money but you did gt at least one call...

This hand has more to do with the players in the hand then the actual cards themselves...I wouldn't beat myself up over it...would they be berating you if you check the turn and they both checked and then you bet the river and they both folded?       I think the guy who should be berated is the guy who called the turn and then folded...what could they possibly have to call other then a set or a king of spades...that makes no sense.

Simply if you think your bet would be raised then bet it...if you think they would fold then check and hope for a bluff...you played the hand strong and actually the deception was in the bet, checking may have been a bit obvious...that you had the ace high flush or straight flush...next time someone heckles you for the way you played a hand and won...ask them "How would you have played the hand?" and smile knowing that you have their cash.

  2. You made a smart bet since it was an open-ended straight at the minimum! the fact that it was a flush with it was a definite bonus!!!

  3. The odds were great but was pulled off and congrats....no one as far as i am concerned would not bet it irregardless whether the turn or not...many were more than likely jealous as can rarely occur...and everyones strategy is different. I too have been ridiculed but matters not as i do what i feel i am comfy with. Thats what poker is a game of " chance"...good luck and again congrats.

  4. They're idiots. The only way any bet gets called with that board is if someone has the ace or king, regardless of if you bet the turn or wait for the river card. There's absolutely nothing wrong with betting at that point.

  5. wtf

  6. Things went that way because it was a small table. You won anyways..

  7. The question is missing an important detail:

    Was there a pre-flop raise ?

Since you had "outs" with the pair after the flop, it was OK that

you bet out or called. Chances are the person who induced the bet after the flop either raised pre-flop w/ A-something and didn't hit  and wanted to make a play at the pot or they made their hand and wanted to induce a call.

Now on the turn you make the nuts:  The person who checked

missed his hand: with a board that scary (6-8-9-10 of spades)

unless you've made your hand (in this case I would say at least the nut flush - Ace high) it is best to check and fold because you have to assume you are beat since there were 2 callers after the flop. That is not the board to try to bluff at a pot with.

Now you bet, but how much in relation to the pot ?

It's obvious you wanted a called and you did get one,

so it must have been the correct amount.  I will assume the person who acted after you called the bet and the person who checked folded his hand.

Now comes the river: a blank. You bet and then the remaining player folds. I will assume he stayed in the hand to try to hit it on the river - what if he held J-Kof spades ? or Q-K of spades ? If he hit the Q or the J all of a sudden your hand is no good. Or: maybe he held a small spade in his hand

and realized his flush was no good. Another possibility is that he held a pocket pair to the board and was trying  to make quads - since that didn't happen, he folded. I think at this point  the person would have had to made his hand to call you even if you just made a "value" bet (about 1/3 the size of the pot) on the river to try and induce a call.

I think you played it well.

  8. wow the people u were playing with must be crack heads, a straight flush is the second highest hand, next to royal flush, so yes if i were u i wouldve went all in.  And if u had the 7 of spades, u already won, cuz if it dont matter if the other guy had aces or not.  He woulve just have a flush
