  1. Madussa was a woman long ago that was a huge criminal. She wore wigs that usually were wild and out there, made out of rope. This gave her her appearance, and made people think that she had a head of snakes.

  2. Medusa is a character from greek mythology. She is one of the Gorgons, daughters of Phorcys.

  3. Medusa (Μέδουσα [Médousa], meaning something like "queen" or "protector") was a gorgon in ancient Greek mythology, the most familiar story of her and Perseus.  Gorgons (Γοργών or Γοργώ, meaning "terrible") were creatures with snakes for hair and sharp fangs.  Looking upon them (there were three: Medusa, Euryale, and Stheno, the second two being immortal and the first, mortal) would supposedly turn into stone those who gaze upon them.  It's important to remember that beliefs change, especially in the vast period of what we call ancient Greek history. The image of the Gorgon went through many phases and symbolized different things, but ultimately was utilized as an apotropaic symbol, or a symbol that warded off evil.  The image was seen as terror, even awe,  incarnate, and was incorporated in various amulets and even temples, the most famous being on the temple of Artemis.  They look kind of comical to modern-day viewers, but obviously symbolized something to ancient Greeks.  So, no, they weren't "real" per se, but were a hodge-podge of ideas regarding certain concepts, worldviews, symbols, etc. that evolved over time.

  4. The Medusa was a creature of Greek Mythology that was a Gorgon or a witch (depending of which version of the tale you read).  At one time she was a beautiful woman turned by a jealous goddess into a monstrous creature with venonmous snakes for hair capable of turning any man who gazed upon her into stone.  The story, of course is fictive.
