Was my Italian "friend" lying about his "family"?

Hes from Sicily and he told me that his dad was in the "family". Why would he just blab it out like that when we havent really known each other that long? I thought they would kill you if you told someone. Does he tell everyone that when they ask him what his dad does or was he just lying?

  1. he is full of BS

  2. Either he doesn't realize what a serious thing it is, or he's just joking.

  3. Your friend could be pulling your leg.  He may have an overactive imagination and was having fun.

Maybe he figures people expect him to tell them stories about the "mob" and his family. Stereotypes are hard to get rid of.

Not all people of Sicilian ancestry are in the mob.

  4. Hahaha, what a liar.

  5. Probably he is lying, because people just brag like that to joke around. Then again, if he is italian, there is a more bigger chance that his dad is in there.

  6. he was probably bluffing to impress you. if his dad was really in it, there is not way he would have told you so soon [or even at all].

  7. Maybe he wasnt being serious? Im italian and I like to mess with people by saying that.It gets sort of old always being asked if youre mafia, so its easier to make it a joke

  8. In Sicily, the power of the Cosa Nostra ("mafia") cartels extends to the point that they own state politicians. Membership, while no kept like a club membership's list, is rather common.

However, most likely your friend is bragging about how important his father's position is within the Cosa Nostra. Unless it is obvious your friend is living opulently, he probably isn't the boss of anything.

  9. Jk, he should learn the first 2 lessons in life. Never rat on your friends and always keep your mouth shut!

  10. he was probably lying. if you really wanna out him watch for the "Mafia movies cliche" like they all wear black drive black cars blah blah blah. nobody would just blab something out like that even if they knew someone for 20+ years.

I babysat for this family for 6 years. the father was in the "butchering business" and he'd always have these guys coming and going picking up stuff who called themselves "loan sharks." lol it was SO obvious what they did i mean money up the wazoo . but they were very secretive about EVERYTHING. but they didnt seem like the mafia families you see on tv. because that's all fake. they were a normal family they didn't flaunt anything. I really don't even think his kids or his wife had any idea.

so your "friend" is probably lying for attention. like i said watch for the mafia movie cliche's

  11. si perchè se era un mafioso te lo veniva a dire proprio a te...

  12. I think he is lying. He would not just tell someone like that... Especially if you said you don't know him that well... He is lying in my opinion.

  13. I don't get it =\

  14. They are very proud to be bad in Italy now no shame at all.

  15. There is a small chance he was telling the truth, but a larger chance that he was just trying to impress you.

  16. its likely he was lying... alot of Itallian guys who want to look tough claim to have mafia ties. Some of them probably due, but it tends to be a great uncle or a second cousin who doesn`t really talk to them.
