Question:

Was my gerbil the runt of the litter?

About 11 months ago i bought two gerbils that were from the same litter. Captin, my brown gerbil has grown to the normal size of an adult male gerbil. However, my other gerbil Tiger who is the same age seems to have a stunted growth and is much smaller than Captin. They both live in seperate cages because they began fighting so there isn't any competion for food. I always give them plenty of exercise so i know Captin isn't overweight. Do you think Tiger was the runt?

  1. he  couls be or a very late developer if he is the runt there is nothing to worry about i have baby mice and i have a runt hu is half the size as the others

  2. He could be the runt or he could be a dwarf. Check his hands and feet. Are they alot smaller than the other ones. If not he was probably just the runt of the litter.

  3. I recon runts are the best, it probably is a runt, but runts are strong, they had to fight hard even at the beginning. They are tough. Read or seen Charlotte's web? The pig was the runt.

My dear (and gone in April) cat was the runt of the litter, and I chose her when I was 2 1/2, they were moggies and the kittens were in a basket, i pointed to her and the owner said "oh, don't pick her she's a runt, she's ugly, chose another prettier one" so...what did i do, chose her. She lived until she was almost 18 years of age and she was the most graceful little cat I've seen or known.

I also have rats and one is a lot smaller than the others. I think it is natural and runts can be just as healthy if not more healthy than the others.

  4. Yes. It's possible he was the runt. As long as he's getting enough food and is active and healthy, he'll be fine. As Dawacky L said, runts usually have a rough start but can grow up and be just as healthy as their litter mates.
