Was my sister supposed to get a stimulus check?

I'm going to sum this up. I thought I would receive a stimulus check because I filed my 2007 tax return. However, I found out that my parents claimed me on their return (I'm not sure why. I turned 18 in 2006) so therefore, I'm automatically not eligible for the check. Oh well, right? Well, my younger sister (she just turned 18 this past February) received a stimulus check. When she was filing her taxes, she made a mistake and said that she wouldn't be claimed as a dependent on anyone else's return. Well, the next day both her and my parents were contacted. Problem was resolved-my parents filed with her as a dependent and that's what her taxes said. Then just last week, she receives a stimulus check. Was this a mistake? I guess you can say I'm a little jealous. I have a 4 month baby and $700 left to pay for school if I want to attend in the fall. My family says I can't have everything I want....But is this right? She was claimed as a dependent on my parent's return.

  1. No it's not right, but the checks were paid out according to the initial filings, not amendments.  She might or might not be told to return the money.

Do you still live with your parents?  If you do they might be able to legally claim you since you are a student.  If you don't live with them, they aren't.

Good luck with school, the baby and everything else.....

  2. It sounds like her original tax return was filed as if she was not a dependent of another.  It is possible that an amendment was filed to correct the error.  If it is indeed an error, don't be jealous.  The IRS will catch up to her.  Why do you have to pay for school?  With a child, you are considered an independent student and your eligibility for financial aid depends solely on your income.  Have you completed a FAFSA?

  3. there isn't a person here that can tell you yes she was or no she wasn't....what i can't understand is why are you so petty

about such a small amount.......sure you could have used the money....but guess what i always wanted a pony too

thats right you guessed it i didn't get one,but my sister who's always been very very musically inclined[gulliard] got the piano that she begged for............im not saying i was a happy

camper about it, but i soon came to realize that what she so wanted was going to last a life time...my little pony, after cleaning his **** out of the stall, and exercizing him ,getting up at an unGodly hour would have worn off in very short order

so it was right in the long run, poor pony would have probably run away from me.......don't be small...this is the Gov't ''HELLO

You really out to cause her IRS. problems..............really

so un---nice...family is family is family

  4. FYI - EFC on the FAFSA is what you are expected to contribute toward your education. In your case 0. Most schools offer emergency loans that you can pay back once your financial aid comes in just ask the financial aid office. As for your sister, she will probably have to pay it back.
