Barry Foster was more than just an outstanding Steeler Running Back. He had a GREAT set of hands and was utilized very well in short yardage pass plays much like his contemporaries Roger Craig and Thurman Thomas. He was one of the better "All Purpose" backs from the early to mid 90's and played an intrical role in Bill Cowher's early success as a head coach. But after Foster left the Steelers in the mid 90's, he never again regained his fame. Steeler front office Genius Tom Donahoe{ who was an expert at plugging in talented players to fill voids} successfully plugged in Bam Morris after Foster and of course plugged in Future Hall of Famer Jerome Bettis after Morris. HOWEVER. Pittsburgh never again { and possibly never before} had an All Purpose running back quite as talented as Barry Foster.

Was Barry Foster an UNDER ACHIEVER because of his relatively short duration of stardom despite his overrall talent?

  1. for a hottie, you ask a lot  of sports questions, how come ?

  2. i would not say he was an under achiever. its just some players fit better with certian teams that use their players talent that best suits the player himself if u catch what i'm triing to say

  3. yea, he was

  4. wasn't he the one that got caught with alot of mari-jane?i guess yes to your ?

    GO STEELERS!!

  5. He was hurt a lot,but he was a good  player the last team I remember him with was the Panthers, but he was cut in preseason because again because of injuries he would have been a HOFer if he could've stayed healthy.

  6. Barry "Bananas" Foster is one of the most appropriate nicknames that Berman ever came up with.  Barry Foster was nuts.  Seriously, he was not right in the head.  I think he was manic depressive or something.  Remember when he went to the Panthers?  He went to camp for about a week, and then he just quit.  Walked away.  Said football didn't interest him anymore.

So in that context, yes, he was an under acheiver.  But in his eyes, I'll bet he'd say that he achieved everything he set out to do.

And why on earth did Cowher not give him the ball 4 times in a row from the 2 yard line in the 1995 AFC Championship game against the Chargers?

Nice coverage, Tim McKyer.  Way to get beat deep with the Super Bowl on the line.

1994 San Diego Chargers - the worst team to ever make it to the Super Bowl.
