  1. yeah it was a steam engine

  2. It used to be called Daimler Benz - Mercedes was one of the owners daughter. As far as I know they build the first car yes . Why not google it

  3. No. Im not sure but i think the first brand name car in america is Ford.

  4. no it was ford

  5. A Ford was the first car invented. Model T to be exact.

  6. No, but Karl Benz is usually mentioned as the "first" guy to build a reasonably good petrol-powered car.  Same company, different name.  The name "Mercedes" didnt' come along until 30 or 40 years later.  Mercedes is a girl's name.  Mercedes cars were named after the daughter of one of Daimler-Benz's distributors.

P.S. This question gets asked a lot.  I continue to be amazed all the people who think the Ford Model T was the first car. How could something so silly be such a widespread myth?  Wow.

  7. kinda

  8. Actually, it was a Gottlieb Daimler. Carl (Karl?) Benz joined later. Mercedes was the name of Karl's daughter. I think it was closer between Ransom Olds and Daimler than people allow. Ford made mass production of the car a reality after visiting a Swift meat packing plant and observing the assembly line used to slaughter animals. Gruesome isn't it.

  9. Though under a different name at the time, yes it was the World's First Automobile.

On January 29, 1886, Karl Benz applied for a patent for his motorized vehicle.  In November of the same year, Benz received Patent No. 37435a, and his three-wheeled invention has since been recognized as the world's first automobile.

I found two great in-depth articles that showcase the history of the automobile and the inventor with patent drawings and everything.  If you are really interested, it is worth looking at.

  10. No,

The car was a Benz made in 1885 or one of the other cars made before this that were not successful.

The Mercedes was made by a company that competed with Benz, and then merged With them, to form Daimler Benz, which may account for your friends delusion.

  11. Not technically the "Mercedes" per se

Karl Benz , 1844-1929, German engineer, credited with building the first automobile powered by an internal-combustion engine. The car, driven in Mannheim in 1885 and patented in 1886, had three wheels, an electric ignition, and differential gears and was water-cooled. As a result of a merger in 1926, Benz's company became Daimler-Benz AG (now Daimler AG), the manufacturer of the Mercedes-Benz automobile.

  12. Cars were invented during the same time period in Germany and the USA, but the first patent was issued to Karl Benz for the 3-wheeler mentioned in another post.

Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler were comptetitors in the early days of the automotive business, Benz was an automotive engineer and the first powered road vehicle was actually a motorcycle. Daimler designed powerplants for a wide variety of uses (including zeppelins) and designed a 4-wheel car around the same time as Benz's 3-wheeler.

Daimler built a race car in the early 1890's for an annual race in France. An Austrian industrialist made a deal with Daimler to buy 20 cars IF he could guarantee a win in the French race. The project was a success, and Daimler chose the name of his customer's daughter (Mercedes) for the brand name of his automobiles. After World War One Daimler and Benz joined their companies to form DaimlerBenz, and named their automobile brand Mercedes Benz.
