I know that the UN was created to maintain peace. Does it only maintain peace between its 192 nations or does it try to stop conflicts worldwide.

For example, if country A and B are not members of the UN.

Country A and B are fighting a war against each other. Will the UN try to stop it?

  1. Yes im studying human geography right now and the UN's goal is for world peace which includes that of non-members THE UN is just a omposition of powerful countries that come together to solve global problems and help solve situations

for example they might help starving african countries even though they are not a member etc.

    hope this helped =)

  2. The UN was founded in 1945 with its main proponent being President Roosevelt, It followed on the idea of the "League of Nations", which the USA withdrew from and soon after-wards collapsed.

The role of the UN is to maintain peace, to solve international conflicts, assist with international agreements (i.e. 'Law of the Sea', 'International boundaries', International air routes, Telecommunications, Conflicts over trade deals etc) plus assist with aid to refugees and starving people and with World Health.

It tries to stop conflicts from starting or, if they have started, to assist with solving the conflict. Unfortunately the Security Council does not have the power that the earlier creators had hoped for. The US has been a major barrier to world peace in the UN, breaking many of its agreements, violating the UN charter and breaking International Law. Other countries, France, The USSR, and Britain (all permanent  members of the Security Council) have also, but to a much smaller degree, broken agreements of violated the UN charter.

  3. The UN was meant to respond to all issues. However, it holds its member countries in priority. It's taken them 4 years to begin peacekeeping in Burma (Myanmar) and just recently have they started peacekeeping in Sudan to resolve the Darfur conflict. Taking your example, if country A was fighting B, the UN may only try to stop it if it was significant. As we see, there is no UN interaction in the Iraq war right now (because the US is practically the UN). The bottom line is this: the UN can only go so far.

  4. I really must say that the U.N. is really doing a great job of doing nothing. Look at the world conditions.

  5. The UN was frist started as the leadage of nation and has more joined it became the United Nation but it protext all country but the USA we only pay the bill

  6. From the very beginning, the United Nations was meant to maintain world peace, not just amongst its members.  The victorious Allies of the Second World War intended to prevent another catastrophic war.  The defeated Axis Powers, including Germany and Japan, were not even admitted at its inception.  Yet, of course, the United Nations sought to deter these states from starting another war and was actively involved in achieving that goal.

  7. The U N is a joke Why should the U S of A act as if some little backward country has an equal vote as America

  8. idk sorii

  9. no they will send emissaries

  10. In my opinion the UN was created to legitimize its own control over the world.

True, they do good. However, they are just as tyranical and crooked as any other government on earth. (If not worse than).
